"All God's angels come to us disguised." ~James Russell Lowell

Sweet baby Elijah peacefully returned to his Heavenly Father on September 23, 2011. And although he has left a space in the life of many that will never be filled, there is peace in knowing that little Elijah is free from his earthly struggles. He was loved by many, and will be missed greatly.

Elijah was survived by his mother, Tara Ann Morris, his father, Ryan Law, his 2 brothers, Seth Law (9) and Brighton Law (3), and his sister Chloe Law (7). Funeral Services will be held for sweet angel Elijah at:
Redwood Memorial Estates
6500 S. Redwood Road
Salt Lake City, Utah
On September 28, 2011 at 11:00 am. Viewing will start at 10:00 am prior to the service.

Elijah's parents are coping with the horrible heartbreak of losing a child. In an effort to alleviate some of the stress of planning services for Elijah, there has been a fund set up at America First Credit Union. The name of the fund is "Elijah Micheal Law". The "Donate" button on the upper right hand side of this blog is the pay pal account linked to Elijah's Fund. In lieu of flowers, we ask that you donate to this fund. Any help, no matter how small, is greatly appreciated and needed. The love and support that has been felt is overwhelming, and greatly appreciated.

Elijah's parents would like to give an extra special thanks to the many people at Primary Children's Medical Center and Intermountain Medical Center, for the intensive medical care and love that Elijah received.

Elijah's Story

On January 7th, 2011 Elijah Michael Law came into this world. Elijah's mommy had a medical condition that made it hard for her to carry him full term, and because of a placenta abruption he was born 14 weeks early.

Elijah suprised the doctors right from the start weighing about a pound more than he was supposed to. But because his little body wasn't ready to be here, Elijah suffered a grade 4 bilateral brain hemorrhage. The  brain hemorrhage caused horrible damage to little Elijah's brain and the doctors were not hopeful for Elijah. The doctors talked to Elijah's mommy and daddy about letting Elijah go back to heaven but after prayful consideration they decided that he needed to be here on earth and continued medical care.

Over the next couple months, even through surgeries and complications, Elijah grew and thrived. When the doctors felt like he was ready, Elijah got to go home with mommy! He loved being home with his sister and two brothers. His sweet smile touched the hearts of many, and his precious spirit made and impact that we will never forget.

Elijah has fought really hard to stay here with us for as long as he could, but he is now ready to go back heaven. He has touched so many lives in the short time he has been here, and has tought us so much more that we ever could have imagined.  We are so grateful to have had Elijah in our lives.

Although we do not know how much longer we will have with our angel, we know it will not be long. Elijah's mommy and daddy do not have the means to pay for services for Elijah after he goes back home to heaven. That's why we have set up a fund for anyone who would like to help. Thoughts and prayers are appreciated greatly as little Elijah is ready to be free of pain and suffering.

Medical Questions:

Why was Elijah born so early?

Elijah's mother has an abnormal uterus condition called bicornuate uterus. Which means her uterus is "heart-shaped"

The complications associated with a bicornuate uterus are:
  • Recurrent Pregnancy Loss
  • Preterm Birth
  • Breech Birth

Elijah's mom suffered from a placenta abruption (the placenta peeling away from the inner part of the uterus) causing internal bleeding for Elijah's mom and a depleation of oxygen and nutrients for Elijah. The placenta abruption resulted in an emergency C-Section to save Elijah and his mother's life.

Why did Elijah suffer from brain hemorrhaging?

According to americanpregnancy.org:

"Intraventricular hemorrhage (IVH) – Babies born at less than 34 weeks have an increased risk of bleeding in their brain. This happens because immature blood vessels may not tolerate the changes in circulation that take place during labor. This can lead to future complications such as cerebral palsy, mental retardation and learning difficulties. Intracranial hemorrhage occurs in about 1/3 of babies born at 24-26 weeks gestation. If preterm labor is identified and is inevitable, there are medications that can be given to the mother to help lessen the chance of severe intracranial hemorrhage in the newborn."

Unfortunately because of the emergent nature of Elijah's case, they were unable to prevent this from happening. The doctor's at IMC stated that his MRI showed the worst brain bleeds they have seen in an infant at that hospital ever. His brain bleeds eventually caused hydrocephalus (the build up of fluid inside the skull, leading to brain swelling) and cerebral palsy (disorder that involves brain and nervous system functions such as movement, learning, hearing, seeing and thinking.)

Why is Elijah passing away?

After many complications with shunts (drains that drain the built up fluid off of Elijah's brain) and other devices used for the same purpose, the doctors consulted with Elijah's parents. Since he had had so many complications that have further damaged his brain, they decided to take all drains out to put an end to all of Elijah's suffering. Since there is no release of the pressure that is built up because of the fluid, the brain swelling will eventually start to shut down Elijah's brain.
